Napoleon’s egotistical self-image is best captured in his own words. In his personal diary he states, “The presence of a general is necessary: he is the head, he is the all in all of an army” (Bonaparte). This quote mirrors Napoleon’s attitude as emperor: all men may be equal beneath him, but only he held ultimate power and importance in France. Napoleon was essential to the military success of the French Revolution, and his tactical genius on the battlefield ensured the spread of equality and liberty. As Napoleon himself states, “The presence of a general is necessary: he is the head, he is the all in all of an army.” As seen by the previous military defeats of the French army, Napoleon was in fact the key factor which turned the tide in France’s favor, proving his own words to be true.
